What variety would the giant field pumpkins be considered? Google search doesn't yield much useful info. Growing some Treece pumpkins this year if it makes a difference.

Species cucurbita pepo. Hard green stem. There are many varieties. Atlantic Giants are cucurbita maxima.

I know there is Howden and Phat Jack in the gene pool of a lot of the big ones.

What they said..Phat Jack is what I recommend pumpkin patches grow when they want 60+lb pumpkins for retail. Wolf is a little bit smaller but has a huge green stem.
