Do you pay any attention to what direction you grow your main vine (northern hemisphere)? Have you experienced that sometimes a vine just wants to grow north for instance? Or that the secondaries just seem determined to go towards the rising sun?

Of the pumpkins I've had over 2k, the main vines headed E, E, S, N, W, W, E. I rotate stuff around and haven't noticed much of a preference. Sometimes you get a plant that's difficult to lay down, but I haven't had any wanting to turn east on their own.

Agree with Wolf. I don't grow size anything like Andy, but I have grown in very heavy shade after 230pm daily for the last 15 years. The heavily shaded tree line is due west of my garden and if I run my plants facing west, they will grow that way and don't try turning back east on their own (enough that I have noticed). I have even had years where I let field pumpkins go wild and I do nothing, and a few have made it into the base of the woods with pumpkins growing in there.
